Instead of being based in traditional functional harmony, these Modes of limited transposition are derived from repeated patterns and symmetry. Melodies, chords and progressions can be created using the scales, and experimenting with them can lead to interesting note choices that might not be at hand in a diatonic or 'functional harmony' mindset.
